MiWiKi is a freeware, open source wiki engine written in PHP. Its main feature is:

     MiWiKi does not include a visual editor and will not likely ever include such a thing!

This has two main advantages:

1. The website editor can use whatever editing software he or she prefers (such as SlickEdit).
2. The wiki engine is much more secure as nobody can hack something that is not there.

I recommend using WebDrive or a similar (S)FTP client together with MiWiKi. If you're on a VPS or a self-hosted server, MiWiKi should be very useful to you. So please consider this:

MiWiKi's other features are:

• Full UTF-8 Support (in fact, you can only use UTF-8 as there is no need for the archaic and clumsy code pages anymore).
• Generates clean (error-free) XHTML 1.0/Strict documents.
• Includes an off-line MiWiKi markup validator (Checker.php) that checks the entire site for errors.
• Automatically emails the webmaster on serious errors such as parsing errors in uploaded pages.
• Extreme simplicity (I am very new to PHP so I try to keep things simple :-).
• Extreme lightness (MiWiKi does not currently use a database backend and no GUI editor).
• Extreme control.
• Translations in Danish and English, others may be added if other users out there add them.
• Simple forms.
• Simple plugin facility ("code modules").
• Robust and elegant error handling via exception handling and very late generation of the output page.
• Robust and flexible caching of document bodies (so as to not have to parse and generate over and over again).
• Simple and elegant layout that is easy to print without the need for special CSS files for printing.
• Detects and uses the GeSHi syntax highlighter plugin if it has been installed in the proper place.
• Detects and allows the use of the Securimage plugin if it has been installed in the proper place.
• Offers support for banning one or more IP adresses so that they may not read the website.
• Extremely secure as only file types on a global list of MIME file types can be accessed!
• Built-in support for Google Analytics.

MiWiKi is highly usable to serve sites with only one editor. I cannot recommend MiWiKi to those that need the ability to concurrently edit pages on the website. For those users, I suggest heading over to www.wikimatrix.org to find a more advanced wiki solution.

Perhaps the greatest feature of MiWiKi is its simplicity; it illustrates how you can make a functioning, albeit simple, wiki engine in less than 3.000 lines of PHP code. This includes support for multiple interface languages, UTF-8 support, and all the rest.

Missing but planned features:

• A much more flexible layout (so that the user can actually customize this).
• A greatly improved cache feature so that the entire page is cached, not only the body part.
• Generic, flexible plug-in framework.
• More predefined modules (currently, there are only Sitemap.code and History.code).
• More translations, if anybody submits them.
• Possibly a PDF generator option although this is not really required as MiWiKi already prints very well.

Missing features (not likely to ever be added):

• Webmaster login.
• Webwriter login.
• Client login.
• Integrated GUI Editor.
• Revisions (I always disable those in the wiki engines I've used in the past).
• No fancy features that are not needed to display a web page.

I am continuously improving upon MiWiKi, although I have no plans of ever making a full-blown wiki solution like there are already so many of out there. I expect to continue enhancing and improving MiWiKi indefinitely - or at least as long as I use it myself (all of my websites are now using the MiWiKi engine, which is the reason why I work on MiWiKi almost every day).

Notice:
I just found out, after registering the domain www.miwiki.dk, that there is an ancient, long dead project on SourceForge by the name MiWiKi. That project has not been updated since 2006 so I don't see any problems in reallocating the name to this project. Unlike the ancient MiWiKi project, this project is in actual production use on 10+ websites so it is known to work!
